Listen to Your Body—But Did You Know Your Body Is Listening to You Too

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Listen to your body.” Pay attention to fatigue, headaches, digestion, and stress signals. But what if I told you your body is also listening to you?

Every thought you think, every emotion you suppress or express, every belief you hold—it all sends signals to your body. And the thing is: your body takes those signals as truth.

Your Thoughts Become Physical Reality

Think about a time when you were stressed about something—a big presentation, a tough conversation, or an overwhelming to-do list. What happened? Maybe your stomach tightened, your shoulders tensed, or your head started pounding.

That wasn’t just in your mind. Your body responded to your thoughts as if they were reality.

Now, imagine what happens when your self-talk is full of negativity:

  • “I’m so tired all the time.”
  • “I’m too old for this.”
  • “Losing weight is impossible for me.”

Your brain doesn’t question these statements—it takes them as fact. If you repeatedly tell yourself you’re exhausted, your body will feel exhausted. If you believe you’re stuck, your body won’t summon the energy for change.

Negative self-talk triggers a stress response, increasing cortisol (the stress hormone), which can lead to inflammation, fatigue, weight gain, and even a weakened immune system. Over time, these patterns contribute to chronic issues like digestive problems, anxiety, and burnout.

Changing the Conversation

The good news? You can shift this. Your body listens not just to criticism, but also to encouragement, kindness, and love.

Here’s how to start rewriting the conversation with yourself:

  1. Notice What You Say to Yourself

Imagine if you spoke to a friend the way you speak to yourself. Would you tell her she’s failing? That she’s not good enough? Probably not. So why say it to yourself? Instead of “I’m always exhausted,” try “I’m giving my body what it needs to restore.”

  1. Give Your Body Messages of Safety and Strength

Your body needs reassurance. Instead of focusing on pain, say, “I trust my body to heal.” Instead of “I’ll never feel good again,” affirm, “I am creating a strong and vibrant body.”

  1. Feel Your Emotions Instead of Storing Them

Have you ever held back tears and felt a lump in your throat? Or swallowed your anger and later felt a knot in your stomach? Suppressed emotions don’t disappear—they manifest physically. Journaling, deep breathing, or even simply acknowledging your feelings can help release stored tension.

  1. Regulate Your Nervous System

Heart coherence techniques, gentle movement, and grounding exercises signal safety to your body, reducing stress and allowing healing to happen naturally.
